How to Sample Effectively

  • If possible give the sample face-to-face or call when the sample has arrived.

  • Explain how sometimes you need to try a few oils to find the best one for them. It is good to plant this seed at the beginning so they don’t just give up if the sample doesn’t work straight away.  It also takes the pressure off and you can relax more and enjoy the whole process!

  • Explain that you are giving them the oil that is the most effective for most people.

  • Make sure you give them safety instructions and explain how to use their specific ailment.

  • Take their details and record in your spreadsheet.

  • Can you call them in two days to see how they have got on?

Below is an example of phrases you can use for each of the steps shown above;

The most important thing when giving someone a sample is to be genuine. You have found something that has changed the way you view your healthcare and you want to share it with those you care about.

You need to find the most natural way for you, but these are the main things you may want to cover:

Find out if they are open to learning about natural medicine, i.e., you could ask: “Are you interested in natural medicine, or do you use natural medicine?” If you already know they do then just skip this step!

It is then good to show some of your genuine passion for the oils. I think it is a good idea to share how the oils have helped with a minor and a more major health condition, for example, “I have started using pure essential oils to help with my health, I can’t believe how powerful and effective they are. I used Peppermint to help with my headache the other day and it took it away within minutes. My mum now uses them to help manage her high blood pressure. There are literally oils to help with most ailments”.

They usually comment at this point!

Then it is important to be upfront about how you are doing this as a business. You could say, “I have become so passionate about these oils that I have actually decided to do this as a business. I teach educational classes about how you can use these oils for most minor and major health concerns. I love it because they are safer and often more effective than western medicine”

“I would love to invite you to come to one of these classes but first I think it is important for you to experience the effectiveness of these oils first hand. Would you like to try a free sample?”

Then hand them the a-z booklet to have a flick through to help them think of a sample they would like. This also helps them to see how many things the oils can help with.

In an ideal situation, you would have the sample with you, if not then you will need to arrange when you can give it to them or you can post it.

Hand them the sample and tell them how to use it;

“Here is a sample of there are about 30 drops (1 drop of oil from a 15ml bottle = about 3 drops from a sample bottle!) of oil in this sample bottle.  You will need to use 3- 6 drops (this is equivalent to 1-2 drops from the 15ml bottles) for each application.  Apply every two hours if needed.”

Depending on the sample and what it is for, tell them where to apply the oil, topically, internally or aromatically.  Also, it is a good idea to show them how to get a drop out of the sampling bottles as you have to tap the bottom!

Briefly Cover the health and safety – remember, don’t scare them so they don’t want to use the oils. They are very safe, but there are just a couple of things you need to tell them:

  • Always tell them to test the oil on the bottom of their feet first, if they are to apply it topically (See health and safety section for more info and the three ways of applying the oils on the Learn page).

  • Tell them not to put the oils in their eyes, nose or ears. In the event of this happening, advise them to use carrier oil, NOT WATER to dilute the oil.

It is also advisable to give them a sheet with some safety and instructions on how to use the oil for their specific condition. There are a few different sharing leaflets that you can be buy from essential oil supplies.

Here are the most popular ones:

Take their details!

Take their details and Set the follow up – this step is absolutely vital because if you don’t arrange to follow up with them, most times they will not come and tell you about their experience and nothing will happen. Also do not be tempted to just give them your details; most people will not contact you. You must take their name, telephone number and email. Again do not be tempted to just take their email, lots of people will not reply to emails. Arrange to call them or see them to follow up, this has proven to be a lot more effective. You could say something like this;

“Can I call you in a couple of days to see how you are getting on and to answer any questions you may have? “

You can then give them the sampling leaflet with the instructions written down or send them an email (see sampling template in materials) with the instructions on and a couple of links to the oils.
